this made me laaaaaaugh. i remember our carefree youth and how liz, like, totally does not understand straight men at all, ever, i don’t even know if she knows how sperm works, to the point that when i was talking to a different lesbian friend that lesbian friend had to be like “i think it’s cute how you’re describing erections to me, but i’ve seen 90210.” ingrid and liz were all about their baby plans, even then, and mikki reminded me recently of how liz and i were going to have our babies at the same time and mike was going to take care of them, which was a really good plan, linda hirshman might have been right on that one, except that it would have meant staying at conde nast so that i could afford a baby and a stay-at-home husband, which i considered for several years, but no.

the time mikki and i went to liz and ingrid’s beach house she told me the story about how one of their friends wanted to hook up with this guy so she turned up her music really loud and called him and told him he should come over, he was missing this amazing party. i have probably spent the last decade laughing at this and wanting to know how that girl was going to explain a clean apartment with no one there when that guy came over, but he didn’t.

it’s true. we had a nice youth with each other, a marked lack of hospitalization for all of us in comparison to recent years, and boyfriends who were into queer everything. “he had dinner with murray hill.” like, totally.

Oh that “come cover to the party” story… a true early years in NYC classic.

Ingrid just came over and brought me cheese and bread and had a glass of wine (I only had a sip, because surgery) and for 20 minutes it was like our carefree youth before kids and illnesses and real jobs and things both wonderful and terrible took up all of our time. After she left I remembered one of my favorite weekends at the beach house* which consisted of Ingrid and Liz, Esther and Kate, and me and my boyfriend at the time. Ingrid was all “Are you sure he is ok spending the weekend with 100% lesbians?” and I was like “Ingrid, he has been to lesbian plays with me. He had dinner with Murray Hill. He knows all of my friends are lesbians.” But she insisted I check so I asked him and he was deeply offended. “I have so much more in common with lesbians than you do!” he said. “We have the same goals in life.” Then when we got there Liz spent 20 minutes telling me what to do if we got sperm on the sheets and I was all GOD SHUT UP. It turned out he was good at tennis and Ingrid whispered “We have him down as a potential sperm donor now.”

Really life was pretty great then. Now too.

*Of course the weekend I met kara was pretty stellar also.
